FAQ about language teaching
As an international parent, see below how we teach your child Danish in the public school system.
As a rule, it is the public district schools that are responsible for the teaching of district children, who are eligible for basic Danish as a second language or extra Danish as a second language – this is what Vejle Municipality considers a proximity offer.
The proximity offer does not apply in the above form, for two schools in Vejle Municipality: Vejle Midtbyskole and NOVAskolen. E.g., there is the international school program at Vejle Midtbyskolen [LINK TIL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL PROGRAM].
- The basic Danish as a second language teaching takes place outside the class the child is part of - either as one-to-one teaching or in a group. Additionally the child follows the class’ regular schedule.
- The extra Danish as a second language teaching takes place in the class and is taken into account in the regular teaching of the class.
If the child’s age is 14+ the teaching takes place at UngdomsCenterVejle (UCV).
A child can be taught basic Danish as a second language for up to two years. After this, the child will be taught extra Danish as a second language (if needed).
It is an individual evaluation how many hours the child will be taught Danish as a second language.
Mother-tongue education is offered to pupils with backgrounds from an EU/EEA country, the Faroe Islands or Greenland.
Please note that if you are not a citizen from one of the mentioned countries, unfortunately your child cannot participate.

Purpose
The purpose of participating in mother-tongue education is to maintain and develop the children’s familiarity with their mother-tongue and to learn more about their home country. The children have the opportunity to understand their background and to master the language.
Requirements
Mother-tongue education is offered to pupils in grades 0-9. The education is voluntarily and it is free of charge for children living in Vejle Municipality to participate. If you live outside Vejle Municipality, please refer to the municipality you live in.
Mother-tongue education takes place outside normal school hours. Classes are held if at least 12 students from Vejle sign up and if it is possible to find a qualified teacher. Classes take place at one of the schools in Vejle on either a weekday or Saturday.
